There’s More to Life [Cafe] than Brunch

I know you VeggieWala readers are interested in regular restaurants with veggie options, and not only veggie restaurants. However, I recently had another Sunday brunch with a girl friend at Life Cafe on Shelley Street in Central, Hong Kong. Much like previously posted World Peace Cafe, Life Cafe, established in 2004, is a “modern vegetarian restaurant providing delicious healthy food while supporting the community and the planet as an eco-friendly business.” From salads to vegan options and baked goods, Life Cafe provides a relaxed environment for an earthy (but not hippy or ‘granola’) dining experience.

The organic restaurant serves a limited menu with a creative range of choices. It was a good first impression, that perhaps the restaurant specialized in a few dishes and made them really well. Not to mention, I wanted to try it all, and any more choices would have been completely overwhelming!

From the extended brunch menu, and a handful of tofu choices, I finally decided to stick with a ‘traditional’ brunch option: the Eggs Zaatar. It was “poached organic free range eggs served on toasted whole wheat foccacia with baby spinach and topped with a Middle Eastern sesame and herb pesto (Zaatar).”

I was intrigued by the sauce itself, not to mention, I absolutely love sesame. The dish looked impressive and intriguing when it was brought to the table; the poached eggs were buried in the Middle Eastern Zaatar sauce. Presentation was lovely.

When breaking each of the ingredients down, the dish was not incredibly impressive with flavors. Though, I must say, the poached eggs were delightfully runny and I enjoyed wiping each drop up to savor with the focaccia bread. By far, the sauce was the most interesting with a little tang; the sesame seeds that kept getting stuck inbetween my teeth provided for a little variety in the texture. On it’s own, the focaccia was disappointing, and not what I had expected, with little flavor beyond butter. The spinach leaves, sandwiched between the egg and bread left me wanting more; there were only a total of four baby spinach leaves. At least there was a side salad (undressed) on the plate to make up for the greens! The potatoes were actually the most flavorful of the medley that filled my plate.

I would definitely go back and try a tofu-based dish, that I hesitantly passed on this time around. The price is quite reasonable: Eggs Zaatar was HKD$80 and a fresh juice with a blend of beets and celery was HKD$34.

As always, give it a try for yourselves! And then let us know what you think :)
