“Feast” Your Heart Out

I may be on a brunch obsession. A girl friend and I had planned on a Sunday brunch last month, and either luckily or accidentally, we had chosen to go to Feast as our restaurant of choice. When we arrived, we realized that there was a special Father’s Day brunch buffet happening; we decided to give it a shot!

Feast is the restaurant located at Swire Properties’ East Hotel in Taikoo, Hong Kong. The decor is simple, yet trendy with massive windows that make for an enjoyable atmosphere and great lighting during the day. With all the children dining that afternoon, we got to see a number of the very intriguing white, bubble-like or dome-like highchairs that were a stark contrast, yet somehow still complimentary, to the environment.

The buffet was unique: appetizers and desserts were part of the help-yourself buffet table, but main courses were ordered off the menu. We two ladies were lucky; of the four or five choices, there was a veggie option and a fish option (on Father’s Day?!): a pumpkin ravioli and a swordfish.

Looking at the presentations individually, they were gorgeous and nicely colored, taken together, the color palates seems too similar…the overall effect was much less impressive. But of course, presentation is not always correlated with taste. It should be noted that I’m not a fan of the meaty-swordfish (I’d much prefer flakier or fattier fishes), and this experience didn’t much change my opinion. Though, I must say that the flavors were nicely matched, and the rich sauce added some substance to the less flavorful fish.

The pumpkin ravioli was delicious on first bite (a great addition was the sun-dried tomatoes) but with more than one bite, the dish was just too salty. This held true with a couple of the appetizer dishes and salads for the buffet as well. I’d like to give the chefs the benefit of the doubt that Father’s Day was just a one-off, special occasion (exception). I certainly want to go back to give Feast a proper try for brunch, as the food was quite good minus the over-seasoning.

Oh! And I almost forgot! After you enjoy your meal at Feast, take the elevator to the top floor and visit Sugar, the bar/lounge with an amazing view of the harbor. The cocktails aren’t bad either ;)
