Amore Gourmet Gelato, Mumbai

At this point in my life, I’ve traveled to Mumbai over a dozen times. And over the course of my visits, I’ve been very disappointed with the ice cream overall. With the exception of, perhaps, Natural Ice Cream, the majority of ice cream shops in Mumbai serve fake ice cream-like products made with stabilizers, preservatives, and pre-made mixes. The result has been what you might expect: products lacking in flavor, density and smoothness.

Last month, however, I was surprised to come across Amore Gourmet Gelato. Having got to Mumbai after forming a gelato addiction in Italy, I was more than intrigued. Mentally preparing myself for a mediocre experience, however, I chose two flavors – dark chocolate and plum (I can never choose between chocolaty and fruity!). Amore had me at the first lick. The flavor was indistinguishable from the best gelato I had in Italy. The dark chocolate was rich, intense, smooth and satisfying while the plum was clean, bright, and concentrated with chunks of real plums inside. After having tasted Amore, it was unsurprising to learn that some of the company’s founders include Italians from a gelato making heritage and that the company only uses local, seasonal and organic ingredients. They also go for an eggless recipe in order to cater to vegetarians who don’t eat eggs. What is surprising is that Amore goes above and beyond, working with a variety of NGOs to make sure that their business practices are sustainable and beneficial to the local environment and community. Now that is something truly sweet. Next time you’re in Mumbai (or even Hyderabad, Surat, Ahmedabad or Nasik), keep an eye out for Amore Gourmet Gelato.
